The moral of this story? If you're entirely happy with RetroPie 4.4 and are thinking of updating just to have the latest version, then maybe think twice if you're using Final Burn Alpha a lot as you're Arcade emulator/core on your Pi. It mostly plays Capcom games on the CPS-1 and CPS-2 boards as well as most of the Neo-Geo MVS arcade games.

My first thought was that I probably needed to update to romset v0.2.97.44 for Final Burn Neo, so I did this but it didn't solve my problem as the games still wouldn't work. Capcom CPS-1, CPS-2 & CPS-3 games seem to be fine though, as do SNK Neo Geo Arcade games and Cave shooters that I've tried.
